School based care: a lifeline! The JPS-HEB Child Health Center had only been open for one week when Juan (alias) began having symptoms of weakness and dizziness. Since his family was uninsured, they had tried to treat his symptoms with OTC meds. When Juan became so ill that he could no longer walk without help, his school nurse advised him to come to the clinic. His mother was happy to find healthcare for a 5$ fee. The NP quickly evaluated Juan and requested an emergency evaluation. Juan was diagnosed with a large brain tumor. He went to surgery with 24 hours and did great! The family has expressed that without access to school based health, Juan would not have received the care he needed!
